Every year, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) conducts a survey of its members to look at what trends are up and coming for the new year. The 2017 report has recently been released, and shows several new and interesting trends for kitchens. Because trends are something that can impact things like resale value of a home, as well as something that can point the way toward the future of design, it’s important to stay current when designing a new space of your own. While you don’t need to follow every trend, simply being aware of what’s out there can help you make decisions of how best to deal with your own kitchen. These top trends identified by the NKBA for 2017 are sure to impact kitchen design for the next several years to come.
Quartz Counters
In the past, granite has reigned supreme as the countertop of choice for designers and homeowners alike. However, for the last 4 years quartz counters are preferred over granite. Quartz is easier to clean and maintain and is now available in a vast selection of patterns and colors making it the top choice for busy families.
Mid-Century Modern Design
For the last few years, Mid-Century Modern design was one of the more popular looks for remodeling the exterior of a home. That trend has now carried into the interior of the home as well. Kitchen designs featuring elements of Mid-Century design are now being favored over kitchens that have more traditional styles of cabinetry.
Metal Cabinets
Another cabinet trend that’s on the rise is the use of metal cabinetry. This trend is particularly favored by young homeowners, as well as some male kitchen designers working in urban markets. While metal cabinetry might not overtake wood, a metal island in a bold color may be an interesting addition to a modern kitchen design.
Blue and Black Color Schemes
Although white is still the most popular color choice for kitchens today, many homeowners are beginning to add some color, particularly blue and black into their scheme. A blue or black painted island paired with white or gray painted cabinetry has become very popular.
Interior Barn Doors
Looking for a way to disguise your pantry or divide your kitchen from your dining room or living room? Interior barn doors, set on wheels to roll like a pocket door are also gaining in popularity, particularly with the rise in transitional designs.
Two Tones
Like to mix and match? Two-tone kitchens are extremely trendy right now, as is the mixing of metals and different design elements. Cabinets with a pop of color, as well as cabinets that are different colors on the upper and lower segments are also design trends that are gaining in traction in many areas.
Transitional Designs
The most popular type of kitchen design right now is the transitional, or blend of contemporary and traditional elements. This is followed by contemporary design, with traditional kitchens bringing up the rear. Many traditional design elements are also on the outs, with things such as crown molding beginning to disappear from today’s kitchens.
Create an On-Trend Kitchen
While it’s easy to confuse a trend and a fad, a trend is usually something lasting that will pave the way for more designs to come. Therefore, it can help to look at today’s trends to help you determine what it is you want to do with your own space.
